Spooky season is officially here which means I'm incorporating Halloween into everything. Spooky season also falls in line with pie season... and honey crisp apple season. So, I thought it would be fun to make a creepy apple pie. If you want to make something like this then save yourself some time and buy the pie crust instead of making it from scratch. I use Trader Joes frozen pie crust and it's the BEST for sweet pies. Even though the pie looks a little questionable, it tastes delicious - I promise! This is my go to apple pie recipe, I just switched it up a bit for the occasion.
Ingredients:
1 package of Trader Joes frozen pie crust
1/2 cup sugar
3 tbsp flour
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp pumpkin pie spice
1/4 tsp salt
5-6 honey crisp apples, peeled and sliced
1/4 cup maple syrup
1 tbsp heavy cream
2 tbsp maple syrup (topping)
Instructions:
Remove the pie crust from the freezer 1 hour prior to assembly. Pre-heat oven to 375 degrees F.
Peel, core and slice the apples.
In a large bowl, mix the apple slices, sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, pumpkin pie spice, and the 1/4 cup of maple syrup. Set aside.
In a large pie dish, lay the bottom layer of the pie crust. Then add the apple mixture into the pie dish. Drizzle the heavy cream over the top of the apples.
Add the top layer of pie crust over the apples and seal the bottom and top layer of pie crust together along the edges.
Roll tinfoil around/ along the edge for the pie to prevent burning. Then bake for 35 minutes. Remove the pie from the over and carefully remove the tinfoil. Then allow the pie to bake for another 15 minutes.
Remove the pie from the oven. Using a cooking brush, brush the remaining 2 tbsp of maple syrup over the warm pie crust. Let sit for 15 minutes prior to serving.
